Movie Review-Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani

5 Jun

I suppose this review comes in pretty late in the day, considering I just read a report that YJHD has already amassed a massive collection of Rs. 70 crores in just 4 days and is on its way to becoming the movie which has made the fastest 100 crore in Bollywood! I went to see the movie on Friday night itself, but unfortunately got stuck in the rains and missed the first twenty minutes or so of the movie. Nevertheless, I will definitely go see it a second time sometime soon :).

The movie is basically a love story between the lively and extrovertish Bunny, played by Ranbir Kapoor and the studious and subdued Naina (Deepika Padukone). They stumble into each other when they’re part of a trekking tour conducted by MakemyTrip. The quiet Deepika is made to feel at home with Bunny and his gang consisting of Aditya Roy Kapoor and Kalki Koechlin and after a fun-filled holiday it’s time for the friends to separate. Bunny travels to the USA for a course in journalism as he has dreams to see the world and doesn’t want to life an ordinary life of getting married, having kids and so on. Eight years pass and he has drifted away from his family and friends when he suddenly receives an invite from his old friend Aditi (Kalki) who would be getting married soon. He returns back to India and falls in love with Naina. But Naina has her own clinic and doesn’t like his kind of lifestyle. So, how they deal with these issues is what YJHD is all about.

To be frank, YJHD has a weak storyline. But who needs a story when you have such fabulous actors like Ranbir and Deepika in the lead roles? :). There is never a dull moment in the movie though there are some sequences which are totally unnecessary, like the scenes where the 4 friends are running away from some goons out to attack them. Also, the sudden transition of Naina played by Deepika from a shy bookworm to a hottie is also a little unbelievable.
But on the whole, the film has more positives than negatives. Kalki Koechlin does well in her role as the friend who keeps the gang together. Aditya Roy Kapoor too is convincing as the drunkard friend, which is nothing but an extension of his character from Aashiqui 2. The songs are mindblowing, with Dilliwali Girlfriend being my personal favourite :). There are also some surprise cameos by Kunaal Roy Kapoor, who shines in a small but comical role and Telugu star, Rana Dagubati who looks stunning in a 2 minute appearance! But the highlight undoubtedly is the crackling chemistry between the lead pair – Ranbir and Deepika. I think we have a new hit Jodi on the lines of Raj-Nargis, Dharmendra-Hema Malini, Anil Kapoor-Madhuri Dixit and Shahrukh-Kajol. And as far as Ranbir Kapoor’s performance goes, he oozes star power like never before.

For me, this movie is a winner. It’s not a perfect movie, but still is extremely entertaining. I would go with 3.5 out of 5 for Ayan Mukerjee’s Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani. If nothing else, watch it for Ranbir, the new superstar of Bollywood!!

Nice Review….btw…its too early to compare this jodi with the likes of Raj-Nargis, Dharmendra-Hema Malini, Anil Kapoor-Madhuri Dixit and Shahrukh-Kajol yet! This is only their second movie a “jodi”…and both have not yet been blockbusters on lines of what these evergreen jodis have doled out till date! Agree that Ranbir is the next superstar bollywood is waiting for, but this movie is going to tank out soon since the initial hype is giving way to the “word of mouth” real publicity (which is extremely dissapointing). I have been reading your blogs for a while and really liked your reviews. Keep it up!
