Hasee Toh Phasee – Movie Review

9 Feb

Movies, Musings ‘n’ More is back after a short break! Hoping that all our readers had a great Christmas and New Year vacation and have zoomed into the new year with a renewed exuberant spirit!

In continuation with my attempt to watch every film churned out by Dharma Productions on the same Friday on its release, I went and caught the night show of the Sid Malhotra & Parineeti Chopra starrer, Hasee Toh Phasee.
It’s a pretty simple story. Boy meets Girl. Falls in Love. Gets engaged. Falls in love with Girl’s sister. Emotional turmoil. And then, of course, Lives Happily Ever after. Definitely not a path-breaking plot. But Hasee Toh Phasee still manages to strike a chord. Siddharth Malhotra, in his second outing after a high-profile debut in Student of the Year plays Nikhil, who runs a not-so successful event management company. He is engaged to be married to Karishma, a model and daughter of a rich Gujarati businessman. But, then comes Meeta (Parineeti), who is Karishma’s sister and black sheep of the family after she stole some money from her own dad a few years ago and ran away from home. Nikhil is given the task of shielding Meeta from her family and ends up falling for the super-brilliant, yet quirky chemical scientist. To add to everyone’s woes, Meeta needs 10 crores urgently to save her research project back in China and Nikhil needs 5 crores to fund his novel idea revolving around the IPL. How Meeta & Nikhil solve their emotional and financial problems is what forms the crux of the movie.

The movie has some excellently executed scenes which definitely will bring a smile onto your face. The one where Nikhil wakes up his to-be father-in-law in the middle of the night to discuss how he will enter the mandap in his upcoming wedding is hilarious. The music is pretty good too, with Zehnaseeb being my favourite, though sometimes one gets the feeling that the songs were there for no rhyme or reason. Siddharth Malhotra is very endearing as the confused Nikhil and displays immense maturity on screen. That he looks absolutely hot adds to his charm. But, it’s the mad, Chinese-speaking, tooth-paste eating Parineeti Chopra who steals the show. The earnest performances from the lead pair make Hasee Toh Phasee a very watchable movie, inspite of the weak storyline.

Though the movie has been touted to be a rom-com, it’s not really one as it doesn’t have too much romance nor comedy. At best, it’s a story of an odd, imperfect couple trying to find themselves in the big, bad world. A little more depth in the story-line would have worked wonders with such a talented star cast. Nevertheless, considering the dearth of good Bollywood movies of late (particularly after the disastrous Jai Ho), this is a light-hearted movie worth a watch.I would give it a 3.5 out of 5. Watch it for Parineeti and Sid!
